Hi all,

After reading about some members having trouble starting their 380's due to a faulty switch, next thing it happened to mine so I went and picked up the part straight away and today I swapped the parts over. Here's a brief write up......

First, start with a 380

Then, obtain this part from your local Mitsubishi dealer, I got mine for trade price $43

Find the inside of your car, it's usually umm inside the car.

Start your 380 up and turn the wheel to the left and undo this screw

Then to the right...

Straighten the wheel and switch the car off. Climb out, put the seat all the way back and have a look up under the column, you should see two screws. Undo these

Now remove the lower dash trim

With that now done, time to work on the plastic surround on the steering column. Gently pry it open till it pops apart. The piece on top will now be able to be lifted out, the lower piece will come off towards the floor, you may need to move your wheel adjustment leaver and car key.

By now your car should look like this...

Then undo this screw with a Phillips head screw driver

Due to my lack of tools, I had to remove this trim piece to allow access

Next, un plug these connectors

Pushing this white tab down will release this plug

Once everything is un plugged, the faulty switch will slide out of the barrel.

Now slide the new switch into the barrel, then connect the plugs again

Then do up this screw

Once everything is plugged in, test to see if your car starts. If it does, well done you've fixed it. If not, check the plugs!

Put this trim piece back on if you removed it

While everything's apart, may as well clean any dust

Now put all trimming back on in the reverse order of how they were removed, the result

Brilliant writeup and brilliant fotos, pretty much as I imagined it from doing the same on a second gen.

On the old one, the white cover comes off the black part if you want to see the damage on the contacts.

So much for positive feedback. Hardly worth doing a "how to" if all people can do is criticise . Disappointing.

Just did this to mine tonight.

Couple of points

You really need a good short as in stubby phillips head screwdriver to make life easy to get to the screw to take the switch out.

The top plug is a pia to get off...lever it off with a screw driver.

The end of the switch has a tab/hole in it for the ignition key/lever to sit in ..ensure that these two line up and actually join ,otherwise ,the car will have power on with no key and you wont be able to start it.

Thanks Kif for the write up and pics just done mine on the weekend, have to agree with Mike the white plug is a PITA to unplug but all good in the end car starts so that's the main thing.

My ignition switch started tp play up recently. I found this thread and decided to give it a try. The dealer quoted $195 to supply and fit. I bought a new switch from an on line seller for $53 with postage included and fitted it this afternoon quite quickly. The only problem I had was removing the electrical connector that attaches to the switch which was a really tight fit. However all done and works a treat.

I certainly wouldn't have tackled the job without the detailed instructions given here. So thanks for your work with the photos and instructions.

mine has a problem! its a bit difficult to turn the key back past the accesory positon so i can get the key removed, any ideas as to the problem being with the key mechanism? or the switch as described here ?

This is the electrical switch on the end of the key barrel, not the barrel itself.

Is the metal on the key blade heavily worn?

Have you tried your spare key?
